A world full of energy In 1750 was the beginning of the industrial revolution1. The industrial revolution was fuelled by fossil fuels. These fuels contain much energy and because of this, many industrial developments followed each other rapidly. Soon the whole world was built on these fossil fuels. Although the fossil fuels have many great advantages they also have several disadvantages and at this moment we are facing a big problem, the fossil fuels are running out. There is a possibility that there are still a few amounts of fossil fuels hidden underneath the surface of the earth, but there is no way of knowing if this is the case. The solution of this problem is renewable energy. There are different kinds of renewable energy; the first one is solar energy. Solar energy is energy that is provided by the sun, the amounts of solar energy that reaches the earth is tremendous. All we have to do is find a way to harvest this energy, at the moment this is done with solar panels. The second renewable energy is wind energy; this energy is harvested with wind turbines. The wind turbines are preferably placed at sea because the wind power is highest at sea. The third renewable energy is hydro energy; this energy is harvested by placing turbines within dams or underneath waterfalls2. The last renewable energy is biomass; this is energy that is harvested from organic material. The downsides of the renewable energies that are mentioned above is that the techniques for energy harvesting are very expensive and are not efficient enough. Concluding, there are several solutions for the depletion of the fossil fuels, such as solar energy, wind energy, hydro energy and biomass. However, the techniques for harvesting these energies are very expensive and not efficient enough. Which means: There is much to be done. 1 Industrial revolution http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_Revolution consulted 20-09-2012. 2 Hydro energy http://www.ga.gov.au/energy/other-renewable-energy-resources/hydro-energy.html consulted 20-09-2012.
