ICE-cream tycoon Maitland Mackie has been elected rector of aberdeen University. Dr Mackie, a graduate of the university and now chairman of the aberdeenshire-based Mackie's of Scotland ice-cream company, will take up his post on 1 January, succeeding Scotland the What? star Stephen Robertson. The businessman, who is a member of the University Court and a leading advocate of renewable energy, said: "I am very privileged that the students have chosen me. I am very aware from my experience on the University Court that the student body is the principal customer of the university - and the customer is king. It is an honour to be representing the principal customers of the university." Tessa Birley, the student president, said: "The Students' association looks forward to installing him as our new rector in the traditional way. We are confident he will be a real champion for aberdeen students."
