This image from The West Australian 's archives is of one of the early balls held in what was then called the Silver Stocking Cabaret Cave in Yanchep National Park, north of Wanneroo. It was to mark the finale of the 25th Labor Women's Central Executive Conference and summer school. The event was hosted by Mrs S. M. Mason (on the right in the black lace dress). Debutantes were presented by Mrs M. F. Troy (wife of the deputy premier). The deb here is Miss Sheila Holman. Others included misses Marjorie Ray, Jean Graham and Violet Cox. "The girls were gowned in lovely white frocks, some of these being embellished in lace," The West Australian reported. "Each carried a beautiful posy of red carnations, enhanced with maiden hair fern and crimson streamers." Music was provided by Miss D. D'Arcy's 10-piece orchestra. The formalities complete, the guests proceeded to dance the balmy summer evening away. Originally chosen as a secluded venue for Perth's elite, the use of the caves for social functions established a tradition that continues today, with the Cabaret Cave, beautifully lit and decorated in spectacular style. It is used for various occasions, organised through the Yanchep Inn, which is in the park. rod.moran@wanews.com.au
