Poor old Sisyphus. The Greek mythological figure eternally pushes a boulder uphill, only to watch it rolling back down time after time.
The Australian republican movement might relate to Sisyphus and his boulder-shoving quest. After reaching its popular peak in 1999 - a peak that saw a referendum vote against an Australian republic - the push for a republic has endured a number of setbacks.
Of those setbacks, possibly the most significant is the growing affection in Australia for younger members of the royal family. This is not what the republican movement expected. Rather, there was a view that royal popularity was due to Queen Elizabeth.
Once the Queen entered her later years, it was supposed that Australia's view of royalty would decline.
Yet the junior royals have led a -resurgence in positive feeling towards the monarchy. This is reflected in Australia's most popular name for newborn girls. Princess Charlotte of Cambridge may be only one year old, but she is already proving hugely influential. Keep on rolling that rock, republicans.
