COAST & COUNTRY
LESS than three hours' drive south of Sydney and less than two hours' drive from the NSW south coast, Goulburn is a thriving regional city with a rich history.
Goulburn was developed into a major centre for wool and became Australia's first inland city in 1863. Today the community is a hub of history and natural beauty, with all the conveniences of a big city.
It features well-preserved architecture and is surrounded by lush grazing land. Head to the Rocky Hill Lookout at the top of the War Memorial for panoramic views across the rolling Goulburn region.
There is plenty to see in Goulburn, including the majestic white sandstone St Saviour's Cathedral which has a restored belltower. The traditional gothic Saints Peter and Paul's Old Cathedral is also worth a visit.
Take a selfie with The Big Merino, the world's largest concrete constructed sheep.
The giant symbol of the town's fine wool heritage is located just off Goulburn's southern exit and houses an exhibition of Goulburn's 200 year history of wool.
The Old Goulburn Brewery is Australia's oldest surviving brewery and also holds a craft market every month. Rail buffs will love the Rail Heritage Centre at the old Roundhouse, which displays the old steam engines at the Historic Waterworks facility, the only complete, workable, steam powered municipal water supply left in its original location in the southern hemisphere.
Goulburn is home to the prestigious Lieder Theatre Company, Australia's oldest and longest-running theatre company.
