Sounds Australia is facing an uncertain future after funding for its work exporting Australian music overseas was cut.
This week's Catalyst funding from the Federal Government, which gives money to the arts, did not allocate any money to Sounds Australia beyond December 31 this year.
Despite the global success of Tame Impala, Vance Joy, Courtney Barnett and Sia in the past year, the Government found $1 million for the Australian Ballet but cut the funds to Sounds Australia.
APRA AMCOS (the Australasian Performing Right Association Ltd and the Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society), who helped launch Sounds Australia with the Australia Council, were quick to react.
They point out that since forming in 2009, Sounds Australia has supported the careers of 620 Australian artists through its work at 48 different international events in 52 cities across 19 countries.
Vance Joy, Courtney Barnett and Chet Faker all played some of their first international showcases at events staged by Sounds Australia, including at South By South West, MIDEM, CMJ and the Aussie BBQ series.
These events have created 1292 new performances and 1593 business opportunities, from gigs to record deals, synchs on TV shows and ads or international press.
Local music manager Laura Wallbridge has created a petition, which local bands and industry figures have shared, hoping to reverse the decision.
It reads: "We desperately needed this service before it was founded, but such has been its impact that our industry simply cannot function on the global stage without these people and this service in place."Head to change.org and search #SaveOurSounds to sign the petition. Now, please.
