The Doodlakine farmer in this 1927 image was clearing land using a remarkable handmade contraption. It comprises tree trunks attached to two circular steel rims. Pulled behind the tractor, it strips scrub and pulls up root systems. As this cocky was clearing the land, the 1927 - and the ninth - Doodlakine-Baandee Agriculture Society show was taking place. "Delightful spring weather prevailed, and a record crowd attended, including quite a number from the city, Merredin, Kellerberrin, Tammin and other centres," The West Australian reported. "The number of entries exceeded those of any previous show and the exhibits generally were in many cases superior in quality to those of bygone years. The ring events were keenly contested, anything up to a dozen splendid animals being produced in each class. Two Tammin exhibitors in Messrs. Colliver and R. Donnan won many of the principal prizes. In the farm produce section, Mr. W. F. Noock (Baandee) won first prize for both wheaten and oaten chaff, and Mr. Jack Mather exhibited the best sheaf of oaten hay (a splendid sample of 5ft.). The Show Trot was won in very easy fashion by Mr. Jack Grant's Alice Cleeve. Messrs. Vernon Hamersley and McFarlane, M's.LC, were present and the former officially opened the show, which is generally conceded to have been the most successful from all aspects yet conducted by the society." rod.moran@wanews.com.au
