Jarryd Hayne won't be the only Australian turning out for the San Francisco 49ers this pre-season, after Blake Muir was picked up as undrafted free agent by the club.
Muir, who is 195 centimetres and 130 kilograms, will help bolster the team's offensive line after spending most of his college career at the Baylor Bears playing guard.
Sydney born, Muir was one of a crop of bright Australian talents in this year's NFL Draft, but had to wait until after the seven rounds of drafting to end up on a team. He started 37 games for Baylor.
Although Hayne will probably welcome another Australian accent in the locker room, it wasn't all good news on Sunday for the former Parramatta Eel. The 49ers selected University of Florida running back Kelvin Taylor on Saturday with a sixth-round pick at the NFL Draft in Chicago.
Taylor is the 22-year-old son of Pro Bowl running back Fred Taylor and possesses a quality Hayne lacked in his rookie season.
While Hayne fumbled three times, including dropping a punt in the regular season opener, Taylor never fumbled during his 486 carries and 510 touches at Florida.
"We got him on the phone and the thing he said was: 'You won't regret this decision'," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said of Taylor. "That really gave us insight to who he really was."
With the addition of Taylor, the 49ers have Hayne, Carlos Hyde, Shaun Draughn, DuJuan Harris, Mike Davis and Kendall Gaskins at running back. The 49ers, with about 90 players on their off-season roster, will cut their squad to 53 before the start of the season in September, with two of the running backs likely to be casualties.
The 49ers took three running backs into each game last season.
Hayne's prospects are helped by his utility value as a back-up running back who can also be the team's punt and kick returner on the special teams unit.
Meanwhile, The New York Jets have set up an Australian versus Australian duel for their punting job. A day after Super Bowl champions Denver Broncos picked up Melbourne defensive lineman Adam Gotsis in the draft, the Jets selected 196cm tall Mornington Peninsula punter Lachlan Edwards.
Not content with Edwards, the Jets, who have a history of recruiting Australian punters, signed Melbourne's highly-regarded Tom Hackett as a free agent just minutes after the draft ended.
Edwards and Hackett will go head-to-head in the Jets' off-season and probably a few pre-season games before one is cut.
"It was amazing to get the call," Edwards said in a post draft conference call on Saturday. "I'm super happy to be with the Jets."
Other Australians who will be seeking free agent contracts include Alex Kinal (Wake Forest), Jamie Keehn (Louisiana State) and Brad Craddock (Maryland).
