THE FED
FEDERAL
Raced up to his stylish barrier trial to claim the pacemaker just in time.
RAILIGIFY
RELIGIFY
Relishes his home circuit and almost snared his fourth win from seven goes.
NO KHAT
SABKHAT
Stablemate of the winner and he returned in encouraging fashion.
THERE's never any shortage of lightly-tried, progressive gallopers coming through the ranks of Godolphin's massive operation.
Around 12 hours before FEDERAL resumed successfully, Sheikh Mohammed unveiled a previously unraced colt with Aussie connections to win by nine lengths at Wolverhampton (UK).
By Invincible Spirit from Denman's half-sister Rio Osa, Sutter County looks a bit of all right for trainer Mark Johnston - and so does Federal.
The sizeable gelding had not been to the races since chasing home Najoom in Rosehill's 2016 Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400 metres).
John O'Shea sent him out to dart through a gap and win a Rosehill barrier trial two weeks ago and the modus operandi worked again when James McDonald urged him up to claim pacy RELIGIFY.
1. FEDERAL: Godolphin's b g 4y (Medaglia D'Oro (US) - Virago) 59.5 2 (J B McDonald, Trainer: John O'Shea) jumped fairly and settled near midfield on the fence, travelled OK to the home turn where he found room, kept sticking solidly to the task to loom 50m from home before poking his nose in front ($4.60 $5.50 eq fav).
2. RELIGIFY: ch g 5y (Choisir - Sacred Witness) 61.5 carr 59.5 11 (Taylor Marshall, Trainer: Chris Waller) jumped OK but spent some petrol to cross over and set the pace, travelled kindly in transit and skipped away straightening up, joined by the winner 50m from home then did everything but prevail (10.00 11.00) sht \xC2½ hd.
3. SABKHAT: b g 5y (Reset - Sabkha (US) 58 6 (Craig Williams, Trainer: John O'Shea) jumped fairly, travelled a shade keenly early before settling in a handy spot with cover, enjoyed a good run to the home turn where clearly close enough, stuck on as a winning chance to the 100m mark but the first pair then had his measure (13.00 11.00 12.00) sht \xC2½ hd, 2len.
4. SONIC SWISH: 53 8 (B Avdulla) jumped on terms then eased over to settle worse than midfield, taken wide approaching the home turn but still conceded a tidy start at the top of the straight, found the line strongly in blinkers for the first time (5.50 7.00 5.50 eq fav) 2.2len.
5. ROCKOLICIOUS: 57.5 4 (B Shinn) good start, settled in a handy spot on the fence, enjoyed the run of the race to the home turn where conceding the leader Religify two lengths, presented as a winning chance to near the 250m but others hit the line better (5.00 6.00) 3len.

The big chestnut was ridden forward this time, yielding successful results.
SECOND PRIZED
PRIZED ICON
Did the chasing nearing the line and he'll manage a longer essay in future.
COP OUTRUN
CRAFTY COP
Supported on home turf, the youngster led only to find others stronger.
BREAKING maiden status at group 3 level, powerfully-built ATTENTION relished the chance to take a forward spot and show his true worth.
Blake Shinn wasted no time parking the Stratum colt in second position off solidly-backed CRAFTY COP and, fitter for recent racing, the big colt drew to the front then staved off top weight PRIZED ICON.
A $620,000 yearling, hulking Attention is a full-brother to Gai Waterhouse's flashy bay filly Flamboyant Lass but looks nothing like her.
Also eligible for maidens, Prized Icon lost no status in his valiant bid astern of the winner, with the early leader and favourite Crafty Cop seemingly having every chance from up on the front-end.
OBSCURA's lack of early zip cost her a winning chance, yet Godolphin's Street Cry filly made up almost 10 lengths from the 1200 metres to the finish - excellent stuff.
1. 2. PRIZED ICON: br c 2y (More Than Ready (US) - Tropical Affair) 58 11 (G Schofield, Trainer: James Cummings) jumped on terms and settled in a handy spot on the fence, enjoyed a good run to the home turn where close enough, became crowded near the 300m but with room over the final stages he found the line very strongly (9.00 12.00) lg nk.
3. CRAFTY COP: b c 2y (Starcraft (NZ) - Fashion Police) 57.5 8 (Tommy Berry, Trainer: Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes) good start and showed speed to lead, held a clear lead from the mid stages to the turn, engaged in a two-horse war with the winner from the 300m until very late where others were then stronger (4.60 5.50 4.60 fav) lg nk, lg nk.
4. CROWN HIM: 56 2 (J R Collett) jumped OK and settled a shade better than midfield, always saved ground to the turn where urged along, became bottled up soon after but from the 300m he finished off very pleasingly (91.00 101.00 81.00) 0.9len.
5. OBSCURA: 56.5 14 (T Angland) jumped fairly then taken quietly across to the tail of the field, gave all a start to the 600m then turned for home still well back, kept making good ground to the line in an excellent effort in blinkers for the first time (71.00 51.00) 1.4len.

IT'S SWEET
IT'S SOMEWHAT
Godolphin's gelding took time to dominate but ultimately all worked out.
MADE PLAY
MESSENE
As expected he set the speed and gave the winner's supporters a real fright.
SURE SIR
SIR JOHN HAWKWOOD
Sat off the winner but couldn't match his turn of foot when it mattered on turning.
WIDELY regarded as Godolphin's prime prospect for the afternoon, IT'S SOMEWHAT positioned accordingly and James McDonald had plenty of horsepower upon straightening.
Or so it seemed.
The outstanding hoop had no qualms urging the import up to challenge for the lead passing the 400 metres, pressuring pacemaker MESSENE in the process.
Only trouble, Messene wasn't prepared to concede until the final few bounds.
For the best part of the home stretch It's Somewhat couldn't completely shake Messene - although the favourite held sway, McDonald couldn't sool him decisively clear.
Ultimately the slightly superior steed prevailed to land his first victory beyond 1500m.
SIR JOHN HAWKWOOD found the first pair too strong and swift over the trip but he's in fine fettle and now seeks further.
1. IT'S SOMEWHAT: Godolphin's b g 5y (Dynaformer (US) - Sometime (Ire) 56.5 6 (J B McDonald, Trainer: John O'Shea) jumped OK and eased into a handy spot, enjoyed a good run to the turn where he had improved to be an obvious winning chance, joined the leader Messene soon after and although he always held a narrow advantage in the straight had to dig deep to prevail ($1.90 $2.00 $1.75 fav).
2. MESSENE: br g 7y (Lonhro - Belle Giselle) 56.5 3 (Tommy Berry, Trainer: Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes) went straight to the lead, travelled kindly in front and turned for home a narrow leader with the winner about to pounce, joined soon after but to his great credit kept finding the line well to only just miss (5.50 10.00) nk.
3. SIR JOHN HAWKWOOD: b g 7y (Sir Percy (GB) - Athene (Ire) 55.5 5 (B Spriggs, Trainer: David Vandyke) jumped on terms and settled in the middle of the strung out field, ridden quietly to near the 600m but Spriggs was urging him along to trail the winner into the straight, kept finding the line pleasingly and more ground will suit (5.00 8.50) nk, ¾len.
4. GHOST PROTOCOL: 55 1 (Thomas Huet) wasn't the best to jump and settled well back on the fence, travelled in an awkward spot to the home turn where he finally had room, kept finishing his race off strongly after becoming totally unsuited in transit
(51.00 41.00) 3.3len.
5. ENTIRELY PLATINUM: 55.5 8 (D Dunn) jumped on terms and did no work to settle second, always kept Messene within his sights to the home turn, under pressure soon after when the winner improved around him and only finished his race off fairly in the straight
(6.50 6.00) 3.6len.
6. Magic Hurricane: 58 7 (D Oliver) 7th settling, 6th to turn (9.50 17.00) 3.7len.

Joe Pride's genuine galloper has never been further back than second first-up.
RING WOBBLY
COOLRING
Gave a real sight on pace only to lose his bearings and let the winner rail up.
FOUR successes on the trot for Victorian MALAGUERRA but only after he snared a race-winning inside run.
Acceleration is this Magnus gelding's trademark - a quality we've seen in virtually every one of his nine career victories.
And did the gear change prove effective when well-supported pacemaker COOLRING wobbled off a rails-running path inside the final 200 metres.
With pure daylight and a lovely green sward awaiting him all the way to the post, Blake Shinn drove the Freedman Brothers' sprinter into the lead and race four was over.
TARGET IN SIGHT continually resumes from a spell in A1 order. He fleetingly challenged the winner only to find his cushy inside trajectory the deciding factor.
1. MALAGUERRA: B C Micalizzi's b g 4y (Magnus - Tennessee Morn) 57.5 1 (B Shinn, Trainer: Lee & Anthony Freedman) jumped OK and settled in a handy spot travelling on the fence, saved ground to the home turn where he needed room, only saw daylight near the 200m but quickly hit top gear and went on to score with authority ($2.60 $3.10 $2.90 fav).
2. TARGET IN SIGHT: b/br g 6y (Nadeem - Xaaranthe) 59 4 (J Bowman, Trainer: Joseph Pride) settled well back in the small field, trailled up from the 600m to be in the clear and close enough on the turn, found plenty to loom near the 150m but had no answer once the winner found galloping room (10.00 11.00 9.00) 1¼len.
3. COOLRING: gr g 5y (Sebring - Coolroom Candidate) 54 5 (B Avdulla, Trainer: Bjorn Baker) jumped OK and did no work to lead, travelled kindly in front before joined near the 300m, stuck to the task bravely before the first pair finished off stronger late

4. BARBED: 54 3 (J B McDonald) jumped on terms and settled well back in the small field, saved ground to the home turn where he was in need of room, only found that 150m out then finished off very strongly in a luckless effort (26.00 20.00 21.00) 2.1len.
5. BACHMAN: 55.5 10 (K McEvoy) good start, McEvoy eased him over to settle well back in the small field, ridden cold to the home turn where still conceding a tidy start, found the line pleasingly with the wide gate no help (7.00 8.00) 2.3len.
6. Turbulent Jet: 54 6 (Ms W Costin) 9th to the turn (81.00 101.00) 3len.

Game to the end, had plenty to do down the outside but found a superior foe.
MULTIPATH
MULTIFACETS
Charted a variety of paths down the straight and zoomed up all too late.
GODOLPHIN's juggernaut continued when OLD NORTH continued his rise through the ranks.
Lonhro's leggy youngster has done nothing but improve with maturity and experience - he would have learned a lot this time.
Desperate for room to move from the moment they straightened, the big fellow was deftly guided through the field by James McDonald then the gap opened.
End of race.
Old North opened throttle, slipped into the lead and comfortably threw aside challenges wider out.
Those bids came way, way too late from TORGERSEN and MULTIFACETS. Forced to trek a wider path than the winner as they turned for home, both youngsters turned in personal bests.
1. OLD NORTH: Godolphin's b/br c 3y (Lonhro - Bernicia) 56 4 (J B McDonald, Trainer: John O'Shea) jumped OK before settling a shade closer than midfield, travelled fairly to the 600m then became snookered, crept along the fence from the top of the straight to find room near the 200m and quickly hit top gear to post a stylish victory ($3.00 $4.00 fav).
2. TORGERSEN: b c 3y (Pins - Oh So Glam (NZ) 56 11 (Craig Williams, Trainer: Chris Waller) wasn't the best to jump and settled a long way back in a big field, always conceded a sizeable start to the turn after finding room near the 300m, rushed to the line when clear in a brave effort (18.00 20.00 14.00) 1¼len.
3. MULTIFACETS: b c 3y (O'Reilly (NZ) - Swarovski (NZ) 56 9 (J Bowman, Trainer: Chris Waller) jumped OK, eased ascross to settle a long way back after finding early trouble, hugged the rail to the home turn where he needed room, found that near the 200m then hit the line strongly in a luckless effort (12.00 13.00 10.00) 1¼len, ¾len.
4. SOVEREIGN NATION: 56 2 (M J Walker) jumped on terms, settled in a handy spot on the fence, saved good ground in transit but needed room near the turn, pushed clear near the 300m then battled away honestly without threatening (8.00 9.00 7.00) 3.3len.
5. HATTORI HANZO: 56 8 (D Dunn) settled a shade better than midfield, ridden patiently to the 500m and was then taken wider out to improve, battled honestly without threatening as a winning possibility (5.00 9.50 9.00) 3.6len.

A hand or so higher than the winner, the Kiwi enjoyed every chance in the run.
HAPPY DAYS
HAPPY HANNAH
Not as seasoned or accomplished as the first pair, she's a progressive youngster.
PUNY pony SINGLE GAZE has always had a bit of a fan club, whether they be financial or not.
The flashy little chestnut continually gives her all - and plenty of observers cheered her home ahead of sizeable Kiwi VALLEY GIRL in this group 1.
Thanks in no small part to Kathy O'Hara's copybook guidance.
O'Hara afforded the Not A Single Doubt filly every chance to manage 2000 metres for the first time - running to the 200m all looked 'sweet'.
Except for the New Zealand filly finding something more on her inside. From looking assured to win, Single Gaze suddenly had to give her all.
What else is new? Courage has never been lacking in the chestnut's make-up - she defied Valley Girl valiantly to give Canberra trainer Nick Olive a first group 1.
1. 2. VALLEY GIRL: b f 3y (Mastercraftsman (Ire) - Leigh Valley (NZ) 56 7 (B Prebble, Trainer: Ms Donna Logan) jumped on terms and had enough speed to lead early before settling in the box seat on the fence, travelled kindly saving ground to the home turn, with the aid of an inside split soon after kept finding the line strongly after enjoying every chance (11.00 12.00 9.50) ¾len.

Last Saturday the huge operation provided all placegetters in the George Ryder Stakes.
Steering home that winner was one Hugh Bowman aboard Winx - guiding home The BMW winner was our man Bowman, again.
What a week for both horsemen while their horse, PREFERMENT, hasn't done too badly, either.
Taken out of his comfort zone to sit handily and win the group 1 Australian Cup on protest, the lanky bay raced back in the pack this time, then took off early under Bowman's superb judgement.
A narrow win was the result. Stablemate WHO SHOT THEBARMAN almost nailed him but for Bowman's race-winning move before straightening.

3. GRAND MARSHAL: br g 6y (Dansili (GB) - Margarula (Ire) 59 3 (J R Collett, Trainer: Chris Waller) jumped OK but showed no speed to settle well back with the tempo brisk, patiently ridden to the home turn where then easing into the clear, finished his race off very strongly despite wanting to hang in under pressure (21.00 31.00) \xC2½ nk, 1¼len.
4. MONTAIGNE: 54 2 (D Oliver) jumped fairly and settled handy on the fence, the race was unfolding pleasingly for him until shuffled back at a crucial stage before the turn, with room in the straight he fought on gamely in a tough effort (6.00 4.60) 2.2len.
