MR. RIGGS THREE CORNER JACK 2013 / Shiraz Cabernet Merlot Region: McLaren Vale Value: Very sharp indeed Best with: Pan-fried lamb cutlets with smashed peas *** 1/2 Three corner jacks are a spiny weed, prevalent in McLaren Vale, with sides so sharp they can sometimes puncture the sole of your shoe. Conversely, there ain't nothing thorny about this blend, where all three varieties sing in sweet harmony like a trio of famous tenors. Rich, ripe and spicy, yet with firm structure, it cuts a widely appealing tune you'll be humming along to in no time. $17
PETER LEHMANN FUTURES 2012 / Shiraz Region: Barossa Valley Value: Good Best with: Chargrilled rib-eye *** 1/2 The 2013 is out now but the 2012 is still the vintage on most retail shelves and it's in very nice shape indeed. Sourced from a small number of Barossa vineyards that produce low-yielding but highly concentrated fruit, it has a familiar but comforting flavour profile of stewed plum, blackberry and spice, and finishes smooth but not particularly long. Another few years in the bottle could reveal even more about its true destiny. $26
KOONARA LUCY & ALICE 2015 / Pinot Gris Region: Mount Gambier Value: Excellent Best with: Crispy pork belly sliders with spicy slaw **** The freshness and playfulness are instantly apparent in both the wine and the label - named after producers Nicole and Dru Reschke's two young daughters. There's loads of lychee and tangy white peach on the palate, which is balanced with a lively kick of fresh lime juice, making the finish clean, crisp and intensely refreshing. Loads of joy to be found here. $20
FLAMETREE 2014 / Chardonnay Region: Margaret River, WA Value: Good Best with: Prosciutto-wrapped roast chicken with rosemary and garlic *** 1/2 Fruit from five different vineyards in Margaret River goes into this classic regional style that, if anything, is a little tighter and leaner than the old- school types. No malo or lees stirring needed as fruit from a warm vintage was enough to give it oomph factor. Plenty of ripe pear and melon with a gentle lift of citrus and good texture. Classy stuff. $27
TALTARNI CUVEE 2011 / Rosé Region: Various Vic, SA and Tas Value: Blushingly brilliant Best with: Citrus-cured salmon **** A cooler-than-average year, smart winemaking and four years spent on lees has created a pale apricot pink sparkling wine that punches well above its price point. The aromas of freshly baked brioche are enough to make you forget your gluten intolerance, while the flavours of tart strawberry, redcurrant and lemon zest will delight those with a penchant for raciness and daring. $24
DEVIATION ROAD 2013 / Pinot Noir Region: Adelaide Hills Value: Blow me down Best with: An Autumn picnic **** 1/2 This is a wine calling out to be sipped under a canopy of burnished red and yellow leaves with everyone kitted out in a touch of tweed. Delicate but intensely perfumed, it's brimming with juicy red cherry and soft raspberry on the palate, balanced by an underlying, gentle earthiness and some cedar warmth. Roll out the rug and get pouring. $45* Wine writer Tony Love is on leave
