T he far North West of WA is frontier country. The Kimberley. Although about twice the size of Victoria, it supports a population of just 35,000 people - not even enough to fill Subiaco Oval - making it one of the most sparsely populated areas on the planet.
In many ways the Kimberley is still being pioneered. It's a place where people with vision, hard work and tenacity are creating a future for the north. It's where cattle stations have been transformed into luxury lodges, where pearl farmers have learnt to harvest treasures from the pristine waters of the Kimberley Coast, and where the abundant fresh water has been harnessed to grow a huge variety of crops.
And it's where Aboriginal culture is alive and prospering. The ancient rock art which can be found in so many locations throughout the Kimberley is a wondrous sign of the first Australians, while the growth in Aboriginal tourism provides opportunities to learn about the region through the eyes of the people who really know it.
But mostly it is about the landscape. Pristine beaches, towering waterfalls, ancient boab trees, mighty rivers inhabited by barramundi and crocodiles, natural springs and deep gorges. It is a place where another jaw-dropping vista awaits just around the corner.
The Kimberley appears time and again when people are considering their ultimate bucket-list holiday destinations and experiences in Australia. It is the embodiment of what is perceived as the highlight of the Australian outback landscape. It is a region that as Australians we should all experience some time in our lives.
