THE generosity of South Australians is what Mick Malthouse remembers most from his numerous trips to Adelaide over the years.
Mick was coaching Collingwood in the early 2000s when he received some assistance from a kind couple before a clash at AAMI Stadium.
"Our plane was delayed, our bus broke down ... and a car pulled up and picked up Anthony Rocca and myself," he recalls. "As we got closer to the ground, we asked him to drop us nearer to our gate.
"I asked him where he sat at the game and he told me they were on their way to the mountains for a picnic. I felt that embarrassed ... he was actually going in the other direction. The generosity was outstanding." Back in town for The Advertiser/ Sunday Mail AFL season launch at the Adelaide Oval yesterday, Mick says he's enjoying being out of the AFL coaching hot-seat but is excited to be in charge of the team on Foxtel reality show The Recruit.
"We're into production already on that, it's been excellent. I'm working with some good young lads. They're very dedicated and they really want to make it," says Mick of the show, which seeks to find the next AFL star.Hosted by Messenger Newspapers editor in chief Jessica Leo and FIVEaa brekkie co-host David Penberthy, pictured with The Advertiser Foundation patron Angela Condous, the luncheon also featured special guest Dermott Brereton, Crows coach and captain Don Pyke and Taylor Walker, Port Adelaide coach and captain Ken Hinkley and Travis Boak, and the entire The Advertiser and Sunday Mail sports team.
