TEAM boss Ryan Story jokes that DJR-Team Penske has so many South Australians, Farmer's Union has become the Queensland outfit's unofficial iced coffee supplier.
"So there's that, and we always do a Haigh's run," Story laughs. "Caramel chocs and aprichocs are the favourites that the boys always get stuck into, so there's a big piece of South Australia in the team these days." The former Dick Johnson Racing team went global this time last year, when it made its race day debut at Clipsal 500 under the powerhouse Penske banner.
Twelve months later, the unit paired with arguably the biggest name in international motorsport has three South Australians in key roles within the garage.
Story is the Yorketown boy who has risen to DJR-Team Penske's team principal and managing director.
Nick Hughes is technical director, as race day mastermind. And Mt Gambier product Scott Pye is one of the drivers and public faces of the team, along with incoming pilot Fabian Coulthard under an expanded two-car garage this year.
Pye drove for DJR in 2014 but was unseated in the single-car setup by Marcos Ambrose's return from a decade racing NASCAR in the US.
"I feel like, in time, this team will be the benchmark," Pye said. "The potential here is enormous. For me, I'm not new to the category any more, but this is my first time going into a season knowing what I was going to be doing the next year.
"We know it's still going to be tough but we're open-minded about what's ahead." DJR-Team Penske was pragmatic about its chances last year, as an effectively new organisation and with Ambrose needing to readjust to Australian circuit racing.
Two rounds into the year, Ambrose stood aside - fearing his adapting time was holding back the team's progress.
By late last year Pye was confirmed as a fulltime driver for 2016, promoted from his Endurance Cup co-driver role in 2015, alongside the experienced Coulthard.
That faith was immediately rewarded by Pye's rise to pole position in yesterday's opening qualifying for today's 125km Race 1 at the Clipsal 500.
Showing impressive consistency he secured seventh spot on the grid for today's second race in a final qualifying session run on hard tyres.
Story said the early success of his fellow South Australian had come as no surprise.
"This is his third year now so he's been part of our family for a while now," he said. "For him to have the seat he's got, he's there on merit and he's an outstanding young talent."He's got a lot to show the field and there is no doubt he's got the talent to push much further up the field than he's been."
