deported as, bro MEMBERS of a New Zealand crime ring escaping Queensland's tough anti-gang laws have been swooped on by the Immigration Minister, who is now kicking them out of Australia.
Fed-up police are working with Peter Dutton and the department to help get rid of Black Power members who have infiltrated southeast Queensland.
At least nine members of the gang have been deported by Mr Dutton. Under the Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment Act, Black Power are not listed as a declared organisation, meaning they do not face harsher sentences like outlaw motorcycle groups such as the Rebels or the Nomads. Police said the gang did not meet the legislative threshold to be considered a serious community threat.
The gang, whose origins are in New Zealand, has a strong presence in Australia and a significant foothold in Logan.
Wahanui Ronaki, Tukha Whakatutu, Aye Jay Popata and Waaka Nathan Ngati are among Black Power members believed to have been kicked out, in a detention centre awaiting deportation or serving a jail sentence.
Ronaki has appeared in court at least 27 times.
Charges include repeatedly stabbing a man in a Melbourne road rage. The court, which in 2012 sentenced him to five years in jail, heard he had been on a five-day ice bender before the attack.
A Queensland police spokesman yesterday told The Courier-Mail it informed Commonwealth agencies about the group.
"A subsequent decision was made to deport several of those members to New Zealand," a QPS spokesman said.
Mr Dutton said he would take no chances. "I'll do all I can to stop a notorious New Zealand street gang from gaining a foothold in Australia," he said.
"This gang has a reputation (and) I won't tolerate foreigners who are (allegedly) involved in serious criminal activity and who are endangering people, staying in our country."I want our community and country to be a safer place and I will do whatever I can to make sure that happens. Protecting the Australian community is the highest priority of the Turnbull Coalition Government," he said.
