GENERATION Next stepped up for Australia in a 58-run win over West Indies in Barbados, with Steve Smith proud of the way they scrapped in the ODI tri-series final early yesterday.
Smith's side crashed to be 6-173 in the 37th over after the skipper won the toss at Kensington Oval.
But Matthew Wade's unbeaten 57 helped the visitors post a competitive 9-270. The hosts were rolled for 212 in 45.4 overs as Josh Hazlewood cleaned up the tail to grab figures of 5-50.
The decider was in the balance until man of the match Mitch Marsh snared 3-2 in the space of 12 legal deliveries, removing form batsmen Darren Bravo and Marlon Samuels.
Smith said the No.1 ranked team in the world had plenty to work on ahead of next year's Champions Trophy.
"I was pleased with the way we scrapped," he added. "I'm using that word a lot but it's been a bit of a theme with this series ... we haven't seen many large scores, you've had to work hard.
"Wade played beautifully, played with a lot of composure and played good cricket shots.
"He batted with the tail, who stuck around and did a terrific job." It was a timely show of leadership from Wade, who was under pressure to deliver after being preferred ahead of Test wicketkeeper Peter Nevill.
Wade mixed dogged determination with dashing strokes as he conjured a competitive target with the help of Mitchell Starc, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Adam Zampa.
It was just the second time Australia added 25-plus runs for each of the seventh, eighth and ninth wickets in an ODI.
"We didn't have that firepower to finish them off . It was a bit frustrating," West Indies skipper Jason Holder said.
Wade was cautious early, managing one run from 11 deliveries as the locals gave him plenty of lip. But the Victorian belted three sixes to finish his side's topscorer and with a strike-rate of 110.West Indies did not help themselves with a couple of poor errors in the field during the final 10 overs, most notably a simple missed run-out from Denesh Ramdin when Wade was on 29.
