Nick Kyrgios had the good fortune to be elevated three places in the Wimbledon seedings to No. 15 by virtue of his past grasscourt results, but was slightly less lucky with a draw that pits him against Czech disrupter Radek Stepanek in the opening round and, possibly, former champion and world No. 2 Andy Murray, should he make it to the fourth.
In a less-than-ideal outcome for the Australian men's contingent, Bernard Tomic will play Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco, who he beat in three tight sets en route to the Queen's Club semi-finals last week.
Sam Groth meets fifth seed Kei Nishikori, John Millman faces Albert Montanes and Jordan Thompson's main draw debut will be against 14th seed Roberto Bautista Agut.
But, typically, the focus was on Kyrgios, the 2014 quarter-finalist. The Canberran faces a potentially rocky path should he overcome Stepanek, the 37-year-old wildcard now ranked 121st who took the first two sets from Murray in the first round of the French Open last month and can be a tricky customer on grass. He can also be intensely annoying, and the combustible Kyrgios has a famously short fuse. Power will be his best policy.
Next would be Dustin Brown - whose previous Wimbledon scalps include Rafael Nadal and Lleyton Hewitt - followed by veteran left-hander and three-time quarter-finalist Fernando Lopez, before what would be a blockbuster in the round-of-16 against Murray.
For Tomic, either a qualifier or Portugal's Gaston Elias would follow Verdasco, while the highest-ranked player in his quarter is the dual major winner and fourth seed Stan Wawrinka. But the Spaniard will not be easy, as 19th seeded Tomic acknowledged.
"There's probably six to eight players that you don't want to play first round, and for sure he's one of them," Tomic said. "He's a former top 10 player ... and a really tough player.
"He played well last week, he beat Wawrinka and we had a high quality match and we just scraped in there to win, and it's gonna be really difficult." In a relatively small main draw contingent, but with three top-20 seeds, Groth will be the only Australian man to play on Monday, along with the country's top-ranked woman, Sam Stosur, who should - stress, should - progress past Poland's Magda Linette to either former finalist Sabine Lisicki or American Shelby Rogers. Daria Gavrilova starts against Qiang Wang of China.
