JINGILI BMX club rider Ian Orr has made the Australian team that will compete at the trans-Tasman BMX Test in October.
Orr will ride alongside Jordan Callum, Thomas Tucker and Callum Howarth for Australia against New Zealand in the mighty 11s category at Cambridge BMX track.
Orr, who has been riding since he was five-years-old, qualified after coming fourth in the recent trials held in Sydney and will be the only Territorian representative at the tournament.
"I was hoping to make the team, so I was happy when I made it," Orr said. The 11-year-old will join the three other members in the 'mighty 11s' format that is team based. All riders work in a team to achieve the best possible time.
Orr said he is going to ramp up his training schedule as the competition draws closer.
"I haven't been doing much training," he said. "But I plan to start practising more as it gets closer." Jingili BMX Club president Jacquie Ascoli said that it was great to see young NT riders such as Orr achieving so much in the sport.
"For an 11 year old Territorian to make the Australian BMX test team is an incredible achievement," she said.
"Ian is a true sports person both on and off the track with many great qualities.
"Ian trains hard, is always willing to listen to advice from coaches and happy to advance and try new skills.
"As a club we are excited to watch Ian participate in the up and coming test, which will be held in New Zealand." Ascoli said it was a privilege seeing young BMX rider's progress both in the sport and as young men and women.
"As president, one of the wonderful duties I have is watching the kids develop, progress and grow in the sport of BMX and become young athletes both on and off the track."Unfortunately for fellow Territorian Caitlin Jong, she just missed out on a position in the girls team. Jong came fifth at the recent trials, only one place off qualification.
