THERE are 110 Australians fighting with Islamic State or other terror organisations in the Middle East, according to latest figures.
Federal Attorney-General George Brandis released the latest figures last night as he reminded voters that national security should be a major issue in this election campaign.
Mr Brandis said there had been no "easing" in danger, with the official alert level the same since September 2014.
Mr Brandis added that 190 Australians were under surveillance or investigation in Australia for aiding terrorists in some way, such as by financing activities or through recruitment.
The comments come after the tragic gay nightclub massacre in the US city of Orlando this week, where terrorist Omar Mateen shot dead 49 patrons.
During the killing spree Mateen rang emergency services to pledge allegiance to Islamic State.
The 29-year-old took hostages and the tragedy was only brought to an end when SWAT officers engaged in a gunfight and killed him.At least 50 people were -injured in the siege.
