JUST months away from competing at his second Olympic Games as a shooter, Will Godward took time out of his training regimen to visit junior Alice Springs shooters at the weekend.
Godward, in Alice for work commitments, took the opportunity to visit the local shooting range on Saturday morning to impart some of the knowledge he has picked up over his 20 years in the game.
Godward competed in the men's 10m air rifle event at the 2012 London Olympics and will travel to Rio in August to represent Australia yet again, saying he's more than happy to try help junior shooters where he can.
"When I was growing up as a shooter I always looked at the shooters above me as mentors and tried to follow in their footsteps, trying to be like them and get as many tips as possible," Godward said.
"I've had so many great mentors in my time and I'm more than happy to pass on anything I can.
"I know exactly where these kids are at and what they feel because I've been there." Godward began at a Double A club similar to the one in Alice Springs and is now a dual-Olympian, saying that proves anyone can achieve their dreams.
"I first started in 1996 and that was when Michael Diamond won his gold medal at the Olympics and that inspired me to think that I was doing a sport that one day could take me to the Olympics.
"I'll try to give the kids as many tips as I can and then hopefully some can stick and they can use those going forward.
"I started at a Double A club just like this so there's nothing stopping these kids achieving their goals if they really want to do it."Shooting is great because you don't need to be the fastest runner or anything like that, you just need the mental game to get to the top."
