Eastlake gets a guernsey Australian football Ryan de Souza Eastlake Football Club have won a grassroots grant which will be used to buy new guernseys for the club's women's and youth girls teams.
The annual Sydney Swans and Volkswagen grassroots grant competition allows 10 clubs from around Australia to win $1000 to promote their grassroots programs.
Eastlake were the only ACT club to win. The grant will help them allocate money to their women's game.
"At any level, if you're able to get some support from the AFL clubs and their sponsors, it certainly goes a long way to help continue to develop grassroots football," Eastlake football manager Stephen Soulsby said.
"Anything we can do to continue to promote the game, and promote women's footy in particular, is always a bonus."
The Eastlake women's side are first on the AFL Canberra ladder with a 10-1 win-loss record as they aim to defend their premiership.
Eastlake have won eight premierships since the competition started in 1998 and now have a mix of experience and talented youth.
"They're hoping to go back- to-back this year. We've got girls who have played over a number of years who are very experienced, then we've got a group who are relatively new to the game and are just trying to develop their skills - it's a really good combination," Soulsby said.
The Eastlake women's side plays the Riverina Lions next weekend at Kingston Oval.
