BARCELONA 1992 FOUR mates having a blast in a foreign country surrounded by the best athletes in the world. What could be better than that?
That was the Oarsome Foursome - Nick Green, James Tomkins, Michael McKay and Andrew Cooper. "It was a wonderful time in our life," Green said. "It was absolutely the ultimate dream." Green recalls that "perfect race" in Barcelona 24 years ago like yesterday.
"I remember the race, not every stroke - we take about 250 strokes - but I remember the sense of anticipation for what ultimately turned out to be the perfect race for us," the now chief executive of Cycling Australia said.
Green attributed the Oarsome Foursome's success on the water to the quartet's "laconic" nature. They were fit, having the best time ever and competing in sport."How could it get any better as young kids?" he said. "We had this wonderful ability to flick a switch as soon as we put our hands on the boat to get in the race; we were an exceptionally focused and drilled team. It took us 24 hours to think, 'We've bloody won a gold medal!'."
