Renault has revealed we in Australia will be getting our hands on its all-new, all-important Koleos before anyone else.
The brand has announced Australia will be the first market in the world with the new mid-sized SUV in its showrooms when it arrives on August 1.
Renault Australia managing director Jason Miller said Australia getting the model first demonstrated how important the Koleos is to the brand's expansion in Australia.
It's a stark contrast to the last time the brand brought an SUV here: the Catpur compact high-rider was delayed for months due to Australian Design Rules compliance issues while it was on sale overseas.
Complete pricing and specifications aren't yet known, though Renault has revealed the Nissan X-Trail-based range will start at $29,990 plus on-roads.
Many details won't be revealed until closer to the vehicle's arrival Down Under, but the entry price would likely be for a front-wheel-drive model, with higher trim levels offering all-wheel-drive as with the current Koleos range.
Renault hasn't withheld all relevant info, however. The Koleos will have a continuously variable transmission as standard - meaning a manual option is unlikely - along with a 2.5-litre petrol engine.
It is likely the same unit as found in the X-Trail, where it offers 126kW and 226Nm, but regardless of where it is from, Renault says it will tow 2000kg, the same as the current model.
There will be no diesel offering at launch, however Renault says an oil-burner Koleos will arrive next year.
At 4.67m long, the new Koleos is a significant 150mm longer than the outgoing model, which Renault claims allows for more room for cargo and passengers.
Interior photos of an overseas model show a large, tablet-like infotainment screen similar to that found in the new Volvo XC90, heated and cooled front seats, and generous use of stitched leather and chrome inserts.
The image is likely of a high, if not top-spec model, with Renault not yet confirming whether lower trim levels will score goodies such as the tablet screen.
Externally, the Koleos has (thankfully) taken on the sexy styling of its stablemates such as the Clio and, particularly, the Megane, sharing the latter's distinctive headlamp design.
Mr Miller said the new Koleos would deliver on many levels.
"It's bigger both inside and out, is one of the roomiest medium SUVs in its class and enjoys a range of new technologies that provide convenience and peace of mind," he said.
"With its powerful design, SUV credentials and interior refinement, we are sure the new Koleos will be a hit with Aussie buyers."
