AUSTRALIA'S road toll reached a five-year high at the end of June, the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics says.
There were 95 road deaths nationally in June, taking the 2015-16 total to 1269. It is the highest number since 1276 people died on Australian roads in 2011-12.
While the Territory's road toll for the same period of time was only 44, statistically Territorians are more than 3.5 more likely to die behind the wheel than the national average. However, NT police measure their road toll by calendar rather than financial year, and the road toll is down by six in 2016. "Police urge road users to obey all traffic directions, wear seatbelts, always find a sober bob and drive to the conditions," Duty Superintendent Kylie Proctor said.
