FROM BACK PAGE The biggest improvement Australia has made in one Olympiad has been at its two home Games, jumping from six gold in Helsinki in 1952 to 13 in Melbourne four years later and from nine in 1996 in Atlanta to 16 in Sydney.
Great Britain performed the biggest improvement of all more than a century ago, remarkably jumping from one gold in St Louis in 1904 to 56 at home in London in 1908.
The Brits have also set the transformation standard in recent Games. They went from one gold in Atlanta to 11 in Sydney and, after winning 19 in Beijing in 2008, claimed 29 in London.
Chiller said she was confident the team sports as well as the world-best swimmers, sailors, rowers and track cyclists can lay the foundation for an Australian change in fortunes.
Swimming historically provides a third of Australia's medals at a Games and with eight No.1-ranked swimmers going into Rio, they could set up the transformation, but Chiller has also called on the lower-profile sports to also contribute.
"That's why we have a big push to get one or two medals from other sports across the board.
"The sports on the podium in Sydney and Athens need to get back there."The Australian Olympic Committee benchmark based on 2015 results has Australia winning 13 gold, but Chiller believes perfectly-timed preparation and tapering could convert the 18 fourths and fifths into medals.
