Shocked Canberra Cavalry player Aaron Sayers will trade his university studies for a Team Australia uniform at the Honkbal tournament in Haarlem, Netherlands, on Saturday.Sayers will be joined by a team of 23 other players up against strong sides from Chinese Taipei, Japan, Curacao and the Netherlands, in the event starting on Friday and running for 10 days.It will be Sayers' first time representing Australia in the senior squad, and he is excited at the opportunity."It came as a massive surprise. I have just been focusing on my studies and whatnot, and it kind of came out of the blue," Sayers said."It's obviously pretty exciting. I have never been to Europe before, so I thought I'd be silly to turn down that opportunity."Any time you represent your state or country, it's a real big honour, so in the essentials I guess is the pride in another opportunity to represent Australia, and to do it in the senior squad is something I have never done before, so, yeah, very exciting."Former Cavalry players Tim Atherton and Steve Chambers will join Sayers in a squad with a mix of experience.
Sayers is one of five players making their senior international debuts. In preparing for the tournament, Sayers decide to go back to his roots, to develop his game after a three-month hiatus."When I got told that I had made the team, I just joined back up with my local winter club that I played for when I was a 15, 16, 17-year-old," Sayers said."There isn't one team that stands out to me - the opportunity to play on the international level again is kind of exciting, so there isn't one specific team that I do not want to play against."I can't wait for it, though, the chance to get out there in general and represent is something special, and for us the main goal is to win it all."Team Australia manager Jon Deeble is impressed with the squad's quality and is expecting big things at the Honkbal tournament. "We have picked an exciting group, which has plenty of experience, as well as some promising up-and-coming ball players," Deeble said."This will be a tough tournament, with Japan and Taiwan always proving tough. However, we are looking forward to the challenge."Despite the Australian selection and preparation for the tournament, Sayers will be returning for the Cavalry next season. After an impressive 2015-16 season as one of the standouts for the Cavalry, Sayers is hoping to improve."I should be playing there. I have signed the contract to go back for next season, so I'm very much looking forward to it."
