There's history and plenty to tempt the tastebuds on a scenic east coast drive, writes Jennifer Ennion.
Leave the big smoke behind and head to Tasmania's east coast to discover a region that's all about indulging in fine food, history and a little luxury. Whether you enjoy a road trip, seek a quiet weekend away or are searching for that next culinary experience, there's plenty to do along the shores of Great Oyster Bay. Here's five places to visit:
DRAGONFLY LODGE is an award-winning luxury holiday home and tops our list of accommodation choices in the area. With views of Great Oyster Bay, this stunning three-bedroom home in Rocky Hills ticks all the boxes. Standout features of the property include a stone fireplace, heated bathroom floors, elegant furnishings and floor-to-ceiling windows - perfect for a lazy afternoon gazing at the view with a glass of wine in hand. Guests can also expect free Wi-Fi and will enjoy sampling the local produce stocked in the pantry.
SHUCK AN OYSTER, devour a bucket of fresh mussels, or spoil yourself with a serving of abalone - whatever seafood tickles your tastebuds, the east coast has it in droves. Sample organic blue mussels and wild Tasmanian scallops at award-winning Spring Bay Seafoods in Triabunna, or grab some take-away from The Fish Van, also in town. Further north in Swansea, call in to Oyster Bay Seafood for a plate of delicious oysters or a lunch of traditional fish and chips.
ROAD-TRIPPING the scenic Tasman Highway should be next on your wish list. For more than 400 kilometres, the highway travels through picturesque countryside and alongside the Tasman Sea, from Hobart to Launceston. One of the prettiest stretches is when the highway skirts the coast in the Great Oyster Bay area, between Triabunna and Swansea. This section is also the beginning of top touring route the Great Eastern Drive. Travel through wine country and fishing villages, past farmland and quiet beaches. Check out the Tasmanian Seafarer's Memorial in Triabunna and stretch your legs along the pretty Pelican's Walk.
FARM GATES are more popular than ever, and one of the best in the area is Kate's Berry Farm, a short drive south of Swansea. Pick up a punnet of fresh strawberries and raspberries, or pull up a chair in the cafe and indulge in scones with farm-made jam. The farm is a great place to pick up a souvenir of your journey, with jams, sauces, chutneys and dessert wines available in the shop. Don't forget to grab a box of handcrafted chocolates for later, too. The best time to visit is between November and May, when the fruit is being picked.
HISTORY BUFFS should visit The East Coast Heritage Museum in Swansea, which showcases artefacts from the Glamorgan Spring Bay community. The museum's collection includes war medals, a World War I honour roll, convict relics, artwork, books and costumes. The exhibit is housed in a heritage-listed former school house and teachers' residence.
