HOLD the phone, an Australian could win Wimbledon after all. Exciting teenager Alex De Minaur is through to the boys' final at the All England Club after thrashing American second seed Ulises Blanch 6-3 6-2 - a day after dumping French Open junior runner-up Felix Auger-Aliassime from the tournament.
The Spanish-based all-courter had reached the semi-finals at all four grand slam events, after making the last four at the Australian and French Opens in 2016 and last year in New York.
De Minaur, 17, was born in Sydney and spent several years moving between Australia and Spain.
He now lives in Alicante and, despite overtures from Spanish interests, views himself as completely Australian.
His father is Uruguayan and his mother Spanish.
De Minaur plays Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the final after the fifth seed upset Greek top seed Stefanos Ttitsipas 6-4 6-7 (7-5) 6-2 and is now certain to be called up as an "orange boy" for Australia's next Davis Cup tie.
"It's good to get over that semi-final barrier. I'm enjoying every second of it," he said.
De Minaur is bidding to become the first Australian to win the junior singles at the All England Club since Luke -Saville and Ashleigh Barty completed the double in 2011.
"It would be a dream come true," he said. "It's always been my favourite tournament, the tournament I look forward to the most. I wouldn't really be able to put it into words if I got to win." Among past Australian Wimbledon junior champions are Rod Laver, Pat Cash and Ashley Cooper.Roger Federer, Ivan Lendl and Stefan Edberg all won the Wimbledon juniors before embarking on wildly successful professional careers.
