Talk football, not family: Jack Andrew Wu Australian football Sydney Swans skipper Kieren Jack, who will play his 200th game this weekend, pictured at training at the SCG on Wednesday. Photo: PETER RAE Swans captain Kieren Jack says he will not get into an "immature" public slanging match with his parents over the family feud that has marred celebrations of his 200th game.
Jack, the son of former rugby league great Garry, broke his silence on the issue on Wednesday, saying he was standing by his girlfriend Charlotte Goodlet and his youngest brother Brandon, who has taken his side in the dispute.
"My stance on it is pretty clear.
It's a private matter; my wishes are for it to stay that way," Jack said at the SCG on Wednesday morning.
"I'm not going to get caught into commenting too much on it, or getting caught into a 'he said, she said'. It's probably an immature approach.
What I have learnt through this is family issues happen but that's the nature of it. You move on.
The way to deal with it is not as a public matter, it needs to remain private.
"What I will say is my priorities of support are firmly with my partner and my little brother, who I love and care for very much.
"As distressing as the events have been, the level of support we've given each other on top of friends, other family members, teammates, the Sydney Swans in general, has highlighted to us how lucky we are to have those people in our lives.
"That's all I'm going to say on it.
It is a big week, someone told me it's my 200th game this week so I'm happy to talk about football but I'm not going to get caught into commenting on any shape or form of the family matter."
Jack's relationship with Goodlet, a model, Miss Universe Australia contestant and TV producer, is believed to be at the heart of the family rift.
Jack defended her, saying she did not deserve the treatment she had received. "She's strong, she's an independent woman, she's not just a model, I can tell you that, and a lot of people here know that," he said. "I love her very much and am very proud of her."
Jack is angry his falling out with his parents has become public after his mother Donna took to Twitter on Monday, accusing her oldest son of not wanting them at his milestone game against Geelong at Simonds Stadium, in Geelong. Jack said his parents had not been banned from attending this week's game, but stopped short of saying they would be welcome.
Brandon, who is also a Swans player, has taken Kieren's side, while middle brother Rhys has sided with the parents.
Asked if he hoped his father Garry, a former Balmain great and state and international representative, would attend this week's game, Jack said: "It's his decision.
I've heard talk he's been banned - that's not the case."
His parents have reportedly said they will not be there.
"I acknowledge my family did a lot for getting me to the position I'm in," Jack said. "In the current state there is a private matter that's going on and I'm not going to discuss that."
