THE NSW Swifts are heading into the unknown, facing an elimination final against an opponent yet to be decided.
The Swifts' draw against the Steel and Queensland's win over West Coast Fever means NSW will host the Australian conference elimination final on Sunday in Sydney.
The Swifts finished second on the Australian side of the ANZ Championship ladder, while the Firebirds secured a week off and hosting rights to the Australian conference final. The Swifts must wait until tonight to discover if they will meet the Melbourne Vixens or Fever at Sydney Olympic Park.
Swifts midcourter Paige Hadley believes the disappointment of not finishing top of the Australian conference and the importance of Sunday's game will lift the team to a new level.
"When things go against us it tends to bring out our best," Hadley said. "Everything is on the line on Sunday but that should suit us. We know how to dig deep when the pressure is on." Hadley pointed to the Swifts' ability to drag themselves back from five goals down to end their match with Southern Steel on Saturday with a 59-59 draw as proof of their ability to excel under pressure. "Tight situations bring out the best," she said. The winner of Sunday's elimination final will meet the Firebirds in the Australian conference decider. The winner and loser of that match will then take on the loser and winner respectively of the New Zealand conference to decide the two teams to vie for the last ANZ Championship trophy.
