AUSTRALIA and Hollywood collided yesterday when some of the world's biggest names in film attended the annual AACTA International Awards in Los Angeles. 
Celebrities including Abbie Cornish, Miranda Otto, Jonathan LaPaglia, Radha Mitchell, Luke -Bracey, Joel Edgerton and Bindi Irwin were among those who -attended the star-studded event, held at the historic -Avalon Hollywood in LA.
Once hosts Rachel Griffiths and Daniel MacPherson welcomed attendees, official proceedings kicked off, with George Miller making history by taking home two AACTA awards for Best Film and Best Direction for his flick Mad Max: Fury Road.
Miller was delighted to receive his award from legendary Australian filmmaker Phillip Noyce. The two have been friends since the then-novices took a film class -together at Melbourne University 45 years ago.
"You taught me at my very first film class," Miller said.
"I taught you how to load a camera and you have been teaching me ever since," Noyce replied.
"Over the past five years we've seen AACTA International award winners go on to win 16 BAFTAs and 14 Oscars, and we look forward with great anticipation to seeing if this trend again continues this year. We congratulate all winners, and wish them every success as we head towards the pointy end of this competitive awards season," AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella said.
Another big winner on the night was Cate Blanchett, whose newest film Carol received two gongs - Blanchett won Best Lead -Actress and Rooney Mara took home the award for Best Supporting -Actress.The AACTA Internationals will be telecast on Foxtel today at 7.30pm on Foxtel Arts, and at 9.30pm on Arena.
