AUSTRALIA and Hollywood collided yesterday when some of the world's biggest names in film attended the annual AACTA International Awards in Los Angeles. 
Celebrities including Abbie Cornish, Miranda Otto, Jonathan LaPaglia, Radha Mitchell, Luke -Bracey, Joel Edgerton and Bindi Irwin were among those who -attended the star-studded event, held at the historic -Avalon Hollywood in LA.
Once hosts Rachel Griffiths and Daniel MacPherson welcomed attendees, official proceedings kicked off, with George Miller making history by taking home two AACTA Awards for Best Film and Best Direction for his flick Mad Max: Fury Road.
"This year marks the first time we've seen an Australian film, Mad Max: Fury Road, win at our domestic awards in Sydney and then again at our international awards in LA, and we're delighted to see our US and British counterparts also recognise this excellence with Oscar and BAFTA nominations," AACTA CEO Dam-ian Trewhella said.
Another big winner for the night was Cate Blanchett, whose newest film Carol received two gongs after Rooney Mara took home the award for Best Supporting Actress, and Blanchett won Best Lead -Actress.
Best Lead Actor went to Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, after he beat out Matt Damon, who received a nomination for The Martian, and Steve Carell, who was -recognised for his role in The Big Short.
The win marks DiCaprio's second award from the -Australian Academy. He voted Best Lead Actor for his performance in The Great Gatsby in 2014.The AACTA International Awards will be telecast on Foxtel today at 7.30pm on Foxtel Arts, and at 9.30pm on Arena.
