Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie has called on Australians to have a happy Australia Day, but got her oaths mixed up in the process. In a folksy Facebook video on Tuesday, Senator Lambie recited what she said was the Oath of Allegiance: "From this time forward under God, I will pledge my loyalty to Australia and its peoples, whose democratic beliefs I share and whose rights and liberties I respect, and whose laws I will uphold and obey," she said. She added: "If you don't like our democratic rights, liberties and laws ... there are plenty of other countries to choose from."
But she had actually recited the Australian citizenship pledge which would have been read out by about 17,000 new Australians at citizenship ceremonies on Tuesday.
The Oath of Allegiance is read by politicians before they take their seat in parliament. It reads: "I, (insert name here), do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Her heirs and successors according to law. SO HELP ME GOD!"
