ALDI is marking a milestone as it chalks up 15 years since it hit Australian shores to shake up the supermarket scene.
The supermarket group, which has taken a fair portion of market share from Coles and Woolworths by specialising in low-cost private label brands, now has 400 stores and employs 10,000 people.
The German-owned brand has also tackled the duo on their home turf, with Australian growers, producers and manufacturers making up nearly 1000 of its 1200 suppliers.
Coles and Woolworths control about 60 per cent of the market while Aldi's market share is about 11 per cent.
Since the first store opened in 2001 Aldi has transformed the retail landscape. As Australian shoppers became comfortable buying Aldi brands, Coles and Woolworths were forced to follow suit by upping their own private label ranges."Our growth and expansion is a testament to the continued value we offer, as well as the partnerships we have formed with local suppliers bringing high quality grocery products to our customers," an Aldi spokesman said yesterday.
