IAN CARLISLE, AM
Plastic surgeon
After more than 30 years as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Ian Carlisle still refers to his work as "a great joy".
As a veteran volunteer with the charity Interplast, one of his most rewarding cases was treating a young Indonesian woman who had spent years in hiding after an infection destroyed part of her face. Mr Carlisle and his team reconstructed her jaw, teeth and lips, enabling her to go back to school. She now works as a nurse on the island of Sumbawa.
The surgeon is now based at Cabrini private hospital in Malvern, often treating patients disfigured by cancer or accidents.
Since joining Interplast in 1983, Mr Carlisle has spent part of each year treating disadvantaged patients and training staff, mostly in Indonesia, but also in Fiji and the Philippines.
He said it is satisfying to treat those who otherwise would not be helped.
