IT'S time Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull suggested his government revisit the idea of a national identity card, which was first mooted by Labor prime minister Bob Hawke.
There was an outcry on the Australia Card issue in the 1980s, with many claiming it would be an invasion of privacy. The issue was dropped by the Labor Party.
Things have since changed markedly in this world in the past 30 years. In the internet age, millions of Australians are volunteering volumes of personal information online every day. Many of us already have our details stored on a database somewhere.
When I go online to shop for groceries, the supermarket knows what I've purchased in the past and those items pop up on the screen as soon as I log on. A database somewhere knows almost everything about me - even what brand of cereal I eat.
A national identity card would not be a privacy issue for me, and it might be advantageous.Liz Haydon, Runcorn
