Romance and fame in Australian special of world's most watched TV game show Benjamin McMahon and Feng Guo.
When Feng Guo signed up for an Australian special of Chinese reality television program If You Are The One, she really just wanted to practise her Mandarin.
But the 26-year-old Sydney lawyer got much more than she bargained for, nabbing a brand new boyfriend and stardom on the world's biggest game show.
Ms Guo - who has never been in a relationship that lasted more than three months - met Benjamin McMahon, from Melbourne, at the taping of the hit program in Nanjing early last month.
She joined 17 other Mandarin- speaking Australian women and 10 Australian men, hoping to meet their match on a platform watched with fervent loyalty by up to 50million Chinese.
Contestants on the game show, which has a cult following in Australia, can be ruthless in pursuit of their "heartbeat girl" or dream man. For Ms Guo, the connection was unabashedly physical at first.
"Initially what appealed to me was the way he looked," she said of Mr McMahon, who runs a tourism company specialising in the Chinese luxury market. "My sister makes jokes about how I managed to find the 'whitest guy on the show'."
The pair have been on only two dates - one in Nanjing immediately after the program, and one in Shanghai - but they are prepared to test the waters of a long-distance relationship.Ms Guo is staying in an Indian ashram, but they have plans to rendezvous in Melbourne for Valentine's Day and then head to the Maldives for the holiday they won on the show.
"Ben and I are still getting to know each other," Ms Guo says. "So far, I think he gets along really well with my friends, is a lot of fun to hang out with, we both enjoy travelling and being outdoors and we're both quite nerdy."
Ms Guo intends moving to Hong Kong and hopes the love affair, should it still be in swing, can survive.
If You Are The one, which airs on SBS2 in Australia, is the most- watched reality television show on the planet, with about 36 million regular viewers and about 220,000 in Australia. Its host, Meng Fei, is one of the most recognisable faces in China.
When he attended a seminar hosted by the University of Western Sydney in November, he arrived to a hero's welcome.
Seven of the 10 Australian men made a match in the two special episodes and several couples are still dating. Michael Koziol, Stephanie Wood
