Key batsman Kraigg Brathwaite
An overlooked aspect of the West Indies' pummelling in Hobart was that the vice-captain came within a boundary of scoring a century in the second innings. While that innings was based on aggression, the 23-year-old customarily relies more on patience. For much of the first session the right-hander was not overly convincing. This changed from when he played a fine cover-drive to the boundary off Josh Hazlewood. By lunch Brathwaite had reached his half-century.
Key bowler Nathan Lyon
Smith's preference to use Lyon far more than second spinner Steve O'Keefe was explained by the vast difference in the amount of turn they achieved. It was a surprise, given how threatening Lyon looked, that he did not strike until his 20th over.
Key numbers
261 Deliveries from Josh Hazlewood in between bowling Kraigg Brathwaite, to end the Hobart Test, and getting his next wicket, that of new West Indies opener Shai Hope. He would not have been wicketless in the preceding Test, in Melbourne, had he not overstepped when having Darren Bravo caught behind for 12.
21 Test innings since the West Indies' put on 50 for the opening wicket, when Brathwaite and Leon Johnson made 76 against Bangladesh in September 2014. Their highest partnership has been 35, with an average of 16.38.
32 Overs bowled by Australia in the first session, a vast improvement on the mid and high 20s been customary this summer. This was helped by left-arm spinner O'Keefe's approach to bowling his overs in his first Test in Australia, in a little as 82 seconds.
7.22 Samuels' Test average since his 74 to end the series in the Caribbean against Australia in June last year. Failing to reach 50 in any of those nine innings makes it the longest barren stint of his 15-year Test career.
The moment
Just when you though this tour could not get any worse for Samuels ... Rain had already begun to fall at the SCG when Lyon began what was to be the last over of the session. Samuels cut the off-spinner behind point and took a few steps out of his crease, stopped, then kept pursuing a single. Partner Brathwaite correctly had no interest in the run. Samuels was so far down the pitch, and is so languid the end was inevitable. Hazlewood was able to lob a throw back to Peter Nevill.
