DARREN Weir is hoping Mahuta's winning streak continues through to the Australian Guineas after a narrow win at Caulfield yesterday.
Mahuta collected a sixth-straight win when successful in the Autumn Stakes and will chase his first at Group 1 level in the Australian Guineas at Flemington on March 5.
Ridden by Brad Rawiller, Mahuta ($3.20) scored a short half-head win from Sailing By ($14) with Snoopy ($6.50) a half-length away third.
Weir said Mahuta hadn't spelled since he made his debut at Seymour in September with his beachside stables at Warrnambool and blinkers keeping Mahuta in winning form.
Last month, Mahuta ventured to the Gold Coast where he was successful on Magic Millions day. "He's a very tough horse," Weir said. "He's the sort of horse owners dream of." Weir said Mahuta wasn't impressive in his win yesterday but the horse did it the hard way.
"It was his first run in five weeks but he was fit enough for the run," he said. "He walked a bit in the last 100 yards but five weeks between runs, that will give him a good clean out."Mahuta had his price trimmed from $6 to equal favouritism at $5 with stablemate Palentino for the Australian Guineas with New Zealand galloper Xtravagant at $6.
