Australian women's sevens coach Tim Walsh has organised to take his squad to the stadium in Rio de Janeiro where they will compete at the Olympics in a bid to continue their "love affair with Brazil" after taking out the Sao Paulo World Series event on Monday.
Australia did not concede a point on the final day of competition as they beat Fiji (10-0) and the United States (34-0) before crushing Canada 29-0 to clinch their second consecutive World Series event.
"To go back-to-back, which we've never done before, was a really positive step forward and a great way to have a love affair with Brazil," Walsh said. "[I'm] very stoked. I think progressively we got better. The girls performed near their best, which was awesome."
The victory puts Australia well on top of the world standings, ahead of New Zealand (28 points), Canada (28) and France (26) with three legs remaining.
Instead of returning to Australia to prepare for the third tournament in Atlanta on April 8-9, Walsh and his team will check out Deodoro Stadium - which is still under construction - to get a feel of what it will be like before their quest to become the first female sevens gold medallists. Walsh said such a feat was achievable given their recent success and No.1 world ranking. "We're certainly up there with being the potential favourites [for Rio]," he said.
"It's a long way away though. Teams are going to get better. The way to prepare is to win on the big stage and at the moment that's the World Series."
