ASC JOY
WORKERS at ASC yesterday expressed their relief at the decision - including those who may never even work on the Future Submarines project.
Several told The Advertiser they cared more about the continuous build idea - that Adelaide will get to start work in 2018 on the Offshore Patrol Vessels and go on to the Future Frigates in 2020.
The actual construction of the submarines will start about five years after that.
Debbie Spence, from ASC's Machine Systems Team, said workers didn't care who won the contract - only that there would be 12 submarines built here at ASC.
"It's job security for the future, for kids and for us," Ms Spence said. "We're proud for South Australia - not just SA, for Australia as well. It's a big win for us." There have been ongoing job losses at ASC as the Air Warfare Destroyer project winds down. About 800 jobs had gone by the end of last year and more since then.
Before the Government announced that the relatively minor but crucial OPV build would start in Adelaide, there were fears that staff at the shipbuilders would get down to a handful.
The OPV win, the confirmation of the Future Frigates being built in Adelaide, and now the submarine announcement, have restored confidence to workers."You don't know what the future is going to hold and now we've got an exciting future ahead of us," Ms Spence said.
