Australian women's sevens coach Tim Walsh says his team is ticking all the right boxes in its quest for Olympic glory after completing a trifecta of World Series tournament wins with victory at the Atlanta Sevens.
After dispatching hosts USA (22-5) and Canada (26-14) in the quarter-final and semi-final, respectively, Australia showed, yet again, why they are hot favourites for a gold medal at the Rio Olympics in August as they defeated New Zealand 24-19 in the final.
Australia have been the benchmark of this year's World Series with wins already in Dubai and Sao Paulo. With tournaments in Canada and France remaining before Australia turn their attention to winning gold at Rio, Walsh said he could not have asked anything more of his players.
"With the work they put in, there's no surprise that they're coming away with those results," he said. "We're certainly not resting on our successes."
Asked whether he had gold on his mind after watching Australia dominate the sevens circuit this year, Walsh said: "It's certainly on the radar. So far we're going the right way. It's why all the girls are playing rugby ... it's certainly our goal, but the reality is it's three or four months away."
