AUSTRALIA'S top tennis players are in a fight for survival this morning in a bid to keep their US Open hopes alive.
Bernard Tomic and Sam Stosur - who have each played some of their best tennis this week - have much to play for when they take their Round 3 campaign to the New York courts. For Tomic, it is his bid to crash through the world top 20.
For Stosur, it's reclaiming her former glory at Flushing Meadows. Tomic will go head to head with world No.12 Richard Gasquet. A win would push him towards, if not through, the famed top 20 mark.
But Gasquet has defeated Tomic five times over the course of their six matches. "I spoke to him in the locker room," Tomic said. "He was, as well, very tired. He was feeling some problems out there. Everyone is." Tomic was buoyed by he one win against Gasquet.
"I beat him in a very important one, which is Wimbledon, third round 2013. Every match we had in the past was very close. I've learned a lot." Stosur is looking to end a losing streak against Italian world No.16 Sara Errani who has beaten the former US Open champion the past two times they met.
But before that, Stosur had beaten Errani five times back to back. Stosur has blitzed her first two matches of the tournament, looking relaxed and confident on court.
"My first two matches have been really good - but there's no guarantee it's going to happen the next day," she said.
"You have too keep working on it and not take anything for granted."But it certainly helps knowing that you've played some of your best tennis of your career over a two-week period on these courts and these conditions."
