Fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and James Pattinson could play their first international match together on Tuesday as Australian selectors seek to overcome three injury casualties to seal victory in the one-day series in England.
Pattinson was overlooked for the first two matches of the series in favour of Nathan Coulter-Nile, but with the West Australian ruled out of the series with a hamstring strain and Australia also losing the seam bowling of Shane Watson (calf) selectors are unlikely to leave Pattinson out for a third consecutive match, even with John Hastings' call-up.
The only assured selection move for the Manchester day-nighter is Aaron Finch replacing David Warner (fractured thumb) at the top of the order.
Pattinson has not played a one-dayer since January 2014. Warner said the 25-year-old was ready to return at Old Trafford.
"[He's] bowling well. In the nets he's bowling quite heavy [ball] and good control. He's always a guy who's ready to go and always hungry," Warner said
Uncapped one-day duo Marcus Stoinis and Ashton Agar are likely to vie to replace Watson, ahead of his nominal replacement Peter Handscomb. Agar is approaching all-rounder status because of the progression of his batting to complement his left-arm finger spin.
Handscomb, a precocious batsman, has effectively been chosen ahead of uncapped Michael Klinger, who ranks third for Matador Cup runs over the past two seasons and on Sunday notched his eighth century of the county season to propel Gloucestershire into the one-day final.
