GLENN Maxwell went from Big Show to Freak Show in the fourth one-dayer at Headingley but a stunning innings and two unbelievable catches were not enough to save Australia from plummeting to a second-straight loss to England.
The Aussies are in danger of heading home from three months of toil in the UK with nothing to show for it, as the ODI series heads for a decider at Old Trafford tonight.
Having been set 300 to win, captain Eoin Morgan spearheaded England to a comfortable three-wicket triumph.
Australia's patched-up attack, missing an exhausted Mitchell Starc, struggled for control. Maxwell (pictured) did everything in his power to pull it out of the fire, firstly with a knock of 85 off 64 balls when Australia were in crisis at 3-30.
He took an exhilarating full-stretch diving catch to end Morgan's hopes of a century and then produced a spectacular outfield catch, jumping and manoeuvring himself either side of the rope to acrobatically dismiss Liam Plunkett, before conceding he would have been filthy if he were the batsman.
"I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense," he said. "You should have to get back (inside) the boundary. If you look at the basketball rule, you can't jump up in the air and catch it on the way back in." The rule change from 2013 states a fieldsman must always make first contact with the ball from inside the rope, but after that all bets are off.see maxwell's amazing catch: couriermail.com.au/sport
