IN the midst of a triumphant bowling performance by the world champions in the one-day decider at Old Trafford, Australian players were forced to deal with perhaps the most distressing on-field incident that has confronted them since Phillip Hughes.
It was particularly harrowing for Mitchell Starc, who not only was the bowler who struck England batsman Eoin Morgan on the side of the helmet with a bouncer, but was the only Australian in the current team present on that fateful day at the SCG.
Mitchell Marsh (four wickets), Starc and John Hastings all fired with the ball when it mattered most, to leave England capitulating and the series slipping from their grasp.
However, celebrations temporarily turned sombre when Morgan retired hurt after suffering the brutal blow in the seventh over.
In good news, Morgan was eventually able to walk off unassisted from the field. Starc was comforted firstly by concerned skipper Steve Smith as he went back to the top of his mark and then on the boundary rope by coach Darren Lehmann.
Morgan appeared immediately unsteady on his feet after turning his head side-on into the path of the missile and Starc was the first Australian player to his aid.
