JORDAN: The Vicar of Baghdad has appealed to Australia to not leave Iraq out of its refugee rescue offer as thousands of war weary Iraqis are again on the move looking for a safe haven following an escalation in ISIS attacks.
Two days ago 14 civilians were killed and 55 injured in Baghdad from an ISIS attack just days after the terrorist group made a series of suicide bombings in the Iraqi western region of Anbar killing eight soldiers and wounding 17. It has now launched an offensive toward the Jordanian border.
Yesterday Canon Andrew White (pictured), the Anglican Vicar of Baghdad, issued a personal thank-you to Australia for agreeing to step in and assist 12,000 refugees resettle.
Speaking in Jordan, the reverend said Australia was providing when no one else was but he said while the world focused on Syrians it should also not leave Iraqis out of plans.
"Your government's come good but have to include Syrians and Iraqs in their resettlement plans," he said. The appeal came as Iraqi authorities confirmed they were now issuing 12,000 passports a day to citizens looking to flee. Canon White had spent 19 years in Baghdad before he too had to flee.
