THE JOB
I am a production designer. I collaborate with the director and cinematographer using the script to build film, television, music videos, etc. Everything you see on the screen other than the actors and their clothes is the production designer s responsibility. I design, build, buy, source and make things to make the film believable.
THE PATH
I did a foundation diploma of film studies in Sydney, at the Australian Film Television and Radio School. It was a great introduction to the roles in filmmaking. I then did a graduate diploma specialising in production design. It was an intense learning experience where I was able to practically apply and develop a range of new skills. Since then I ve been employed in various roles in the art department on large-scale productions such as Mad Max. I have worked on music videos, short films and TV commercials in Australia and overseas in India and Japan.
THE GOOD
Doing something different every day is exciting and fun. I love the collaboration and working within a team and being able to be creative and practical. I enjoy going to interesting places I may not otherwise have been to and meeting interesting people I may not have met.
THE BAD
The pressure we put on ourselves as filmmakers and artists is immense and there is quite often a huge amount of money at stake on big productions. This can make the job seem overwhelming at times, which is why it is essential that you trust and enjoy the people you are working with and believe in the story you are trying to bring to life.
THE FUTURE
I hope to work on projects in Australia and overseas with talented people, on stories that I am passionate about.
