Rohan Connolly's All-Australian team
Carlton defender Zach Tuohy, Essendon swingman Cale Hooker and Melbourne midfielder Bernie Vince were the surprise inclusions in this year's AFL coaches associations All-Australian team.
Neither of the three made the squad of 40 for the official AFL All-Australian team set to be unveiled on Tuesday night, but were named in the coaches' team of the year, which was selected by votes derived from the Coaches Association Player of the Year award - won by Sydney's Dan Hannebery.
The method for selecting the 22 was developed earlier this year when a group of opposition analysts agreed on an "ideal structure" for a modern-day AFL team - for instance, positions were broken down into roles such as "inside midfielders", "high half forward" and so on.
The final team was based on a two-step process, Coaches Associations CEO, Mark Brayshaw said.

"The first step classified the season's best players into one of the positions in the team structure. Then, each player was ranked in diminishing order of the number of AFLCA Player of the Year award votes earned in the 2015 season," he said.

"To illustrate, Todd Goldstein, Nic Naitanui, Aaron Sandilands and Shane Mumford were all classified as ruckmen. Goldstein (73 votes) and Naitanui (53) were the highest vote earners amongst all the ruckmen. Therefore, Goldstein is starting ruckman and Naitanui is on interchange."
Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said the coaches' All-Australian team was a reflection of the most "pure effect" players have on a game because that is how the coaches judge their votes for the Player of the Year award during the season.
"It's the two coaches getting together and saying 'you worried me the most' versus 'we need these guys to stand up and they did'," Buckley said.
Tuohy won the position of "lockdown small defender" for he earned 22 votes across the year in the Player of the Year award, ahead of Adelaide's Rory Laird on 21 and Collingwood's Marley Williams on 17. Tuohy finished 100th overall in the award.
Nine of the top 10 players on the leaderboard for the Player of the Year award made the team, however Hawthorn play-maker Sam Mitchell was the unlucky having finished eighth with 69 votes.
Six of the top 20 did not make the team.
"We had some inside midfielders that were high up in the coaches' votes, but didn't make the side," Buckley said.
"Sam Mitchell was one of them, because he was the fifth inside midfielder in terms of votes."
The were three captains selected - Western Bulldog Robert Murphy, Sydney's Jarrad McVeigh and Collingwood's Scott Pendlebury. The Pies skipper was given the honour for polling the most votes.
