Germany has announced that it is prepared to take in 800,000 Syrian and Iraqi refugees for the 2015-2016 period, with the possibility of an additional 500,000 after that. This is a clever decision from the German government. Germany has a major ageing population problem and a very low birth rate. This refugee intake will greatly help to reduce this problem.
Australia should be doing the same. Let's take in over 1 million refugees for resettlement in Australia over three to four years. A lot of people may think this figure far-fetched or extreme, but Australia is an underpopulated country. Like most other Western nations, Australia has an ageing population, and in the next few years most post-war baby boomers will be retired and we will need more people to replace them in the workforce. The Syrian and Iraqi refugees could be ideal to help ease this shortfall. A lot would be highly qualified in professions like doctors, nurses, engineers, teachers and tradesmen. Also, a lot would be more than happy to work in "less glamorous" jobs which, sadly, a lot of Australians won't do.
Australia needs more people in Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory, as well as regional Victoria, regional NSW, regional Queensland, and some locations in Tasmania.
To cope with a refugee influx of over 1 million, temporary housing centres would have to be built to help accommodate these people while they are being screened before resettlement - which should not be long as these people are not terrorists, they are just desperate to get away from their worn-torn homeland.
