Australian PM's XIII too strong for gritty Kumuls PNG KUMULS12 AUSTRALIA PM'S XIII40 Jack Wighton had a strong match.
TRY-SCORERS: Page 41 By Tom Decent Canberra's Jarrod Croker and Jack Wighton crossed for tries as the Australian Prime Minister's XIII beat the Papua New Guinea Kumuls 40-12 on Saturday night.
Trent Merrin and his dogged forward pack crafted a perfect platform for Australia's men out wide in Alex Johnston and David Nofoaluma who scored two tries each. Coach Ivan Cleary was pleased with the eight-tries-to-two performance and said the atmosphere of playing in front of 18,113 fans in a 15,000-seat stadium was something they would always remember.
"I thought it was a great experience for all our boys," Cleary said.
PNG dropped the Australians' kick-off, but when the ball was knocked from Johnston's hands when he dived into the corner in the process of trying to score, it sent the local crowd wild.
The moment everyone wanted to see came in the 34th minute.
Winger Justin Olam had the crowd roaring when he sprinted down the right touchline. His only obstacle was fullback Jack Wighton. A right foot step, a dive, and then raised fists sent the fanatic PNG crowd mad.
Late tries to big men Chris McQueen, Euan Aitken and Jeremy Latimore, as well as one to Wighton after the siren, sealed the comfortable victory for Australia.
